Increasing and Expanding Vaccine Coverage

PIVI works alongside countries to expand access to vaccines and reach more people who can benefit from immunization.

More vaccines reaching communities. Across PIVI partner countries reporting influenza data, the total number of flu vaccine doses administered increased from 79,940 in 2024 to 97,638 in 2025. PIVI has also supported countries as they expand vaccination to new populations, including pregnant women in Moldova and children in Bulgaria.

Supporting Countries as they Increase Investment in National Immunization Programs

Sustainable immunization programs depend on countries having the evidence, resources and systems to increasingly invest in vaccination themselves.

From donated vaccines to national investment. Among eight PIVI countries that have received both donated and government-purchased vaccines, the share purchased by governments grew from roughly 10–45% in 2016–17 to 90–100% by 2024–25. Five of those eight countries reached 100% government-purchased vaccines.

Moldova and Armenia increased their purchases of influenza vaccines following studies that demonstrated demand or value, while Tajikistan purchased influenza vaccines for the first time following PIVI-supported efforts to build demand.

Helping to Improve Countries' Epidemic and Pandemic Vaccination Capacity

Strong routine vaccination systems can become critical infrastructure when a new health threat emerges.

PIVI’s work helps countries strengthen the people, processes and systems needed to deliver vaccines—not only through routine immunization programs, but also when countries need to respond to epidemics and pandemics.

Building capacity that can be used in a crisis. During COVID-19, PIVI expanded its support through CoVIP, directly supporting the administration of more than 2.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses across 14 countries.

Supporting global investment in immunization and surveillance platforms; sharing data and best practices

PIVI helps countries generate and use evidence to make informed vaccine decisions—and creates opportunities for countries to learn from one another.

Countries Supported Through NITAG Training

PIVI has facilitated or partnered in 33 NITAG trainings supporting 61 countries, addressing 17 different vaccines and antigens. These trainings help strengthen the processes countries use to evaluate evidence and inform national vaccine recommendations.

Building the evidence for new vaccine decisions. PIVI is supporting RSV surveillance and disease-burden work in African countries to generate evidence needed to inform decisions about maternal RSV vaccination and long-acting RSV monoclonal antibodies for newborns.

Helping Countries Reduce the Time Between Detection, Notification and Response

When an outbreak occurs, every day matters. PIVI helps countries strengthen surveillance systems so health threats can be detected, reported and acted on more quickly.

Through SONAR (learn more about SONAR in PIVI’s history), PIVI supported countries in using the 7-1-7 framework to monitor how quickly outbreaks are detected, notified and responded to—and identify opportunities to strengthen systems for the next health threat.

Detect sooner. Report faster. Respond more effectively.
